Nutrition Survey on Lunch box of Elementary School Children in a Korean Rural Area


Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the nutritional status on the contents of the lunch-box of elementary school children in a rural area of Korea. Food intake and health condition (physical and clinical) survey of 245 school children (from 1st to 6th grade) residing in the Ban gue area of Munmack Myun, Wonseong Country, Gangwon Province was conducted during the two periods of october and november in 1979. A sample of 101 children was selected from these 245 children for hemoglobin value.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1) Average energy intake of subjects were all lower ¢¥than the Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA)
2) Average Prote¢¥n intake of the subject children were lower than the RDA. ¢¥he protein food intake was the pattern of the almost vegetable food, and the protein intake from animal Sources was very meager (see Table 2).
3) The intake, of Vitamin A, Vitamin B2, Calcium and iron were also very insuficiert. 4) The physical status of children subjected were lower than that of the Korean Standard (see Table 3)
5) There was some clinical symptom related with Vitamin B., deficiency on the children Subjected (see Table 4).
6) The mean hemoglobin level was 12.5gm%, and 25.6 percent of the children were anemic (less than 12gm% among those 6 years or more) (see Table 5).
